Everybody hates those members who join this site and treat it like Facebook, just uploading camera phone shots of themselves (clothing optional apparently), crappy MS Paint quality art/fan art of Naruto or whatever the kids are watching these days, art thieves and the list of offenders goes on.
Now the question of 'what is art?' is entirely subjective. But clearly these people don't have any interest in it or have any ability.
I want DeviantART to be a place that showcases quality art and provides a place for artists' to display their art and get work.
What about those who just want to favourite and comment on other people's work? They're welcome, I think my ideal version of this site would allow people to instantly join with a basic account that doesn't come with the feature to submit art.
But to get an artist's account you should have to submit some of your best work to the moderator's to get approval. The standards shouldn't be too high, anyone who shows basic ability in art, writing or photography can get an account. After all alot of people come here to learn and improve their skills.
I think this would instantly improve the quality of this site and I see no reason why it wasn't like this to begin with.
Update: OMG, THIS account right here is what I want to eliminate:

WTF is *ART*? sounds like you call painting, sketches, drawings and others paper/canvas or w/e based artistic material. You site that ppl that desire to only upload pics of themselves, sometimes nude are not included in *ART*...ok so why?
ART is one of those words in english language that isnt very defined without using itself as example. Try to describe what Time is without using it, or a measure itself.
Basicly what Im saying is a agree that somekind of system or rules are required to keep the spirit of this site, but to eliminate a 'expressive' outlet as not *ART* in your eyes is narrowminded.
Btw I dont upload here as i gave up scetching, drawing and my *ART*'s of your forms to further my new *ART* programming, and to me a 20page java script code is *ART*, dont believe me..try replying without it
Art shouldn't have a function and it should be all about expression of emotion and individuality.
Programmers are not artists, like scientists, they work only with the quantifiable.
Nude photos are fine, but not the ones that are simply 'check out my junk'. That's just gratuitous.
I also hate people who just upload a thousand photos of themselves in the mirror holding the camera in their hand.
That is not art, those are Facebook pictures.
My desire is to make a more refined and serious art community. I want to weed out the people who don't contribute anything. Unfortunatley it's a very difficult thing to define.
That's what this whole discussion is about.
Art is at it's essence a creative outlet of a human being, thus for some geeks tasks like Javascript writing or 'battlebot' building is Art...ever seen that show? Those robot creations are a Art of the builders.
My expressive point is when you use Art as your base you both limit and make unlimited boundries of your criteria. Though I agree there are ppl that only upload pics of themselves like its was 'Facebook' but what harm is there in what they do? they have friends that come here and some of them might become very productive contributors after finding this site via a friends 'alternate Facebook'.
What we should limit is the negative Betty's, those that only deconstruct or poison others works with thieft or vulgarity. Those are what the community needs to weed out, forget your Facebookers they are that mole that grows on your skin, sure its not great but doesnt do much harm and is more work to remove than its worth.
Either way, the machine is not the artform, it is the design that surrounds it. Take for example a car, one of the finest machines mankind has created, but it is merely a machine, with purpose and function.
This can be a beautiful thing, but not an artistic expression.
The real art of it comes from the design that makes up the outer shell.
That part involved an artist, even though they had to conform to safety standards and aerodynamics, there's still a soul and an expression there.
But this is not really the issue I have with the site.
My problem are trolls, spammers and generally no good, very bad, horrible people who leave stupid ignorant comments everywhere they go.
I just think a screening process would be a nice idea.
However, I have a problem with your art quality requirement.
I have several friends here with skills that are below average: terrible anatomy, bad sketching and the like, but I'm not a great artist either, in fact, I'm mediocre at best. I have no choice but to get better because of my field but others just can't get better for different reasons(autism, lack of self-esteem, etc.).
I believe that DA should be open to those who can follow regulations, which means no art thief, no copying, no pictures without any relation to art(although a few won't hurt) and definitely no accounts for ranters. Some people are just here to enjoy the community as a whole, there's plenty friends who hang around but several will never achieve "quality art".
That's what I like about DA, it's open to everyone and it isn't as strict as other websites; unfortunately, that's also its flaw.
I've had the very same thoughts many times.
This IS an A R T site, and not something like
a MySpace, or Facebook. It annoys me to no
end to see how people treat this site...
